Question:
What does it mean when you are "shading" the line? Thanks in advance!

"Shading" the line is a misnomer. It is actually "shading the ROW". The foul occurs when an opponent rides from the left of a player who is following the ball and then lets his horse travel into the edge of the ROW just ahead of the player entitled to it. This play by the opponent reduces the sufficient width of the player's ROW which is necessary for him to play the ball on his off side in safety. Rule 24.a) INTERPRETATION -- "Should the player be required to check or alter course to avoid risk of collision or danger, a ROW violation has taken place."

Question:
I have the ball on my off side and strike it forward proceeding directly down the line. An opposing player in front of me approaches from my left and 'camps out' on the line. I can 1)stop and wait for him to clear and take the next shot (that's what the pros do) 2)crash into him (I'm 53 and don't want to do that anymore) or 3)try to make a play on the ball but he has encroached the line so much it is virtually impossible to avoid the ride off. The fact that he camps on the line slows the game down tremendously and is a disadvantage to my team. I am playing in Aiken in the 8 goal and none of the USPA umpires working here call impeding the ROW a foul. Why? I just don't get it.

Rule 24.a) ---Interpretation: "Shading", "squeezing"or infringing the ROW so as to not allow the player with the ROW a clear path to the ball is a ROW violation. Based on your description of the scenario, I agree that the opponent fouled. I cannot explain why the Umpires did/do not call a foul for impeding the ROW.

Question:
If a player hits the ball on an undefended Penalty #3, for example, before the Umpire says "play", and an opponent is injured by the ball, what penalty should be exacted by the Umpires ?

Due to the flagrant violation, Umpires have the discretion to award a severe penalty in favor of the injured player's team including Penalty Nos. 5, 4, 3 or 2. In addition, Rule 28 e. states "If the ball that is struck intentionally ---- endangers a person or horse, the Umpire is encouraged to exact Penalty 10".
